World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 15, 1972, by Resolution 2994.
This date was chosen to commemorate the first United Nations Conference on the Environment, held in Stockholm from June 5 to 16, 1972. On that occasion, the Stockholm Declaration was adopted, which defines 26 principles relating to human rights and environmental responsibilities.
This year’s theme, “Wildlife,” aims to draw attention to the illegal trade in wildlife.
