One year after the first confirmation of famine in the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur, Sudan, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is warning of the risk of famine for families trapped in El Fasher, the besieged capital.
The city is cut off from all humanitarian access, leaving the remaining population with no choice but to survive on limited resources.
The WFP has been unable to deliver food aid to El Fasher by land for over a year, as all roads leading there are blocked. The WFP continues to provide digital cash support to 250,000 people in the city, enabling them to buy whatever food they can still find in the markets, but this is far from meeting the enormous needs of the besieged city.
