International Human Solidarity Day

The Sustainable Development Agenda is centred on people & planet, underpinned by human rights and supported by a global partnership determined to lift people out of poverty, hunger and disease. It will, thus, be built on a foundation of global cooperation and solidarity.

International Human Solidarity Day is:

  • a day to celebrate our unity in diversity;
  • a day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements;
  • a day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity;
  • a day to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication;
  • a day of action to encourage new initiatives for poverty eradication.

One Love.

World Children’s Day

On 20 November each year, UNICEF celebrates World Children’s Day, a global day of action, by children for children, to spread awareness about the rights of children and adolescents. This date is not accidental: on 20 November 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Children and Adolescents, the most ratified human rights treaty in the world, with 196 signatory countries.

This year, UNICEF’s message is clear: “Listen to the Future”.

We ask governments, the private sector, families and all adults to listen to the voices of children, girls and boys around the world.

Only by supporting meaningful dialogue between generations can we, in fact, realize the rights of all children, everywhere.

We cannot disappoint them.

Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games: How ‘Coach Azou’ empowers Senegalese youth through boxing

Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games: How ‘Coach Azou’ empowers Senegalese youth through boxing

Discover how Alfred Assane N’Diaye, known as Coach Azou, established a ‘safe space’ at Dakar’s Yakaar Boxing Club for young Senegalese often left on the sidelines.

The importance of reaching out to the community
Under Coach Azou’s watchful eye, a sparring match begins.

Two young, inexperienced teens, a boy and a girl, square off, just days after the club’s event, the Yakaar Fight Gala. Their technique is still rough, but their enthusiasm is contagious.

“I’ve always had the desire to come here and do something with the youth. Why? Because every time I came here on vacation, I connected with friends, and over time, those ties grew stronger. I then thought, ‘Why not start an organisation and offer something to young people?’”

Coach Azou took his project directly into the community, sharing his mission and establishing a strong local presence.

UNESCO boosts financial independence through sustainable fish farming in Madagascar

Meet Jean Didier Nonta, 55, father of four children.

He lives in the fokontany of Ambodivohitra, Andapa district, in Madagascar’s Sava region.

Like many members of his community, Jean Didier used to rely heavily on the exploitation of forest resources for his livelihood and to support his family.

This includes the cutting of trees for the manufacture of planks and other non-timber forest resources, seriously threatening the sustainability of local forests and biodiversity.

With the support of the UNESCO project, BIOCOM, Jean Didier benefited from training in fish farming in March 2022 and received 800 fry.

He was able to transform a small pond of 30 m² into a pond of 60 m², which allowed him to generate 1,000,000 MGA from the first sale of fish.

Subsequently, he was able to create seven new ponds and ensure regular production of fry.

International Day of the Girl

International Day of the Girl

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

The International Day of the Girl focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

Girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during their formative years, but also as they mature into women.
